About Us

Big Kids 4 Little Kids came to be as a result of a conversation between two of its founding officers. It was Thanksgiving week in November 2000 and Dave Pierce and Owen Rens were talking about how it would be nice to do something that would give something back to the community. They especially wanted to do something that would help children. Further conversations with more friends discovered a common thread – everyone wanted to do something for kids.

The original organizers included Owen and Dave, along with Kim Heffelbower, Susan Dorer, Edward Piper, Mike Sylvester, and John Griffin.

If a group were to be formed, it would have to have a name. Many suggestions were made, but what really brought the name together was a snippet of conversation: that we were Big Kids who wanted to do something for Little Kids. Changing "for" to "4" and our name was found!

Paperwork was filed, monies were paid out, bank accounts were established, and quicker than any of us would have believed it, Big Kids 4 Little Kids became a reality.

Once organized, we came up with several means of raising money to contribute to worthy children's causes. Horseshoe tournaments, golf scrambles, Euchre tournaments, seasonal “Snowmen and Stars” paper icon sales, and more! 2009 will see us sponsor our first Texas Hold ‘em tournament.

After the 2001 golf scramble BK4LK was invited to the MSU Coaches for Kids Press Box Invitational held at the Michigan State University Spartan Stadium press box. There, four representatives from BK4LK made the organization's first major donation to a children's cause when $3,900 was presented to the Sparrow Foundation – a Children's Miracle Network partner.

Then in 2002, BK4LK made a five-year commitment to "Coaches for Kids" - part of the Lansing-area Children's Miracle Network – to raise a minimum of $25,000 to sponsor construction of an examination room in the proposed Sparrow Pediatric Emergency Room. We successfully paid the last installment on that contract, and were present at the dedication of the new Pediatric Emergency Room in 2008. Stop by and see the room you helped to build – Room #61!

Since having met that goal, our fund-raising efforts enable us to donate to a wide variety of worthy children's causes.
When was Big Kids 4 Little Kids organized?
BK4LK was incorporated as a non-profit organization on February 23rd of 2001. It received its tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service effective that same date.
Where is Big Kids 4 Little Kids located?
BK4LK doesn't have a corporate home. We gather together at each other's home for meetings to organize our activities. We are small and we plan to stay small so that more of the money we raise will be available for donation to the causes we support.
